Ideas — Idea Log

The Idea Log is a pre-backlog capture zone for raw opportunities, observations, and discoveries before they have been fully defined. It sits in Zone 1 (Discovery) of the PushBackLog delivery model.

Adding an Idea

  1. Click Ideas in the sidebar.
  2. Click New Idea.
  3. Enter a title and any initial notes. Ideas deliberately start with low structure — you don’t need to have all the details yet.
  4. Click Create.

Discovery Sessions

A discovery session turns a group of related ideas into refined backlog items through a structured AI-facilitated dialogue:

  1. Select one or more ideas from the Idea Log.
  2. Click Start Discovery Session.
  3. Chat with the AI assistant to explore the problem space.
  4. The session generates a draft description, user stories, and potential backlog items.
  5. Promote items directly into the backlog from the session output.

Importing Documents

Ideas can be seeded by importing documents:

  • Paste a URL (a web page, article, or specification document) and PBL will extract the content.
  • Import a file (PDF, Word, or text) that PBL summarises into idea fragments.

The import results appear as draft ideas that you can review and refine.

Promoting Ideas to Backlog Items

Once an idea is well enough understood, click Create Backlog Item on the idea detail page. The idea title, description, and any notes are carried across as the seed content. The original idea is linked to the new backlog item for traceability.

Archiving Ideas

Ideas that are out of scope, rejected, or absorbed into other work can be archived. Archived ideas are hidden from the default list but remain searchable.

Linking Ideas to Themes

An idea can be linked to a theme (epic) to signal that it contributes to a larger initiative. This link is visible on both the idea and the theme detail pages.
